Members of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) intercepted the four suspects in the carpark of Terminal 3 at Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
“We just upgraded our status to heightened alert. We have instructions to maximize our foot patrols and police presence,” said Chief Superintendent Chris Laxa, a Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group official.
The NBI “was able to follow the vehicle up to the airport parking area where they arrested the four suspects while assembling the IED [improvised explosive device],” said Terminal 3 Manager Octovio Lina.
Gunpowder and containers of petrol were also found in the vehicle, the official said.
The bomb was allegedly found in a car that was able to gain access to the parking area that is open to the public.
Airport authorities said they are upgrading security in airports after a mayor from a town in the southern Philippines was gunned down in the airport arrival area in December.
