Have prices reduced? See for yourself, Sonia Gandhi says

RAE BARELI: Asked to comment on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 100 days in power, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday, avoiding any rhetorical flourish, pointed towards her constituents in Rae Bareli and asked them, "Have the prices reduced?" When the villagers complained of high costs, she turned to the reporters and said, "See for yourself."

Sonia, on a two-day tour of her constituency, went door-to-door through villages like Tanda, Rahwan, Bheetargaon and Bakuliha, where the common refrain was inflation, apart from power and water crisis in her constituency. "They (the BJP) made promises they are unable to keep. The people are saying this. You can see this for yourself," Sonia said.

In a beige and mustard cotton saree, Sonia was at her affable best. With the SPG cover surrounding her somewhat relaxed, the people had easy access to her. Instead of the usual rolling down of car windows and talking from inside the vehicle, she stepped out to meet villagers whenever they flagged her down.

Sonia was in her constituency to lay the foundation stone of development projects. The Congress plans to hold state-wide dharnas at district headquarters to protest against the Centre's failure to bring back black money and control inflation. Saying the show of aggression must not remain limited to Uttar Pradesh, Sonia said, "The Congress must get more aggressive everywhere."

It was her second visit to Rae Bareli since the Lok Sabha elections. Meeting people and seeking their feedback on their everyday problems, she promised to take up the issue of poor power supply with the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party government.

People of Rahwan village, Ram Sanehi, said, "We barely get two to three hours of electricity through the day. As a result, canal water supply to our farms is also hit. We have made several requests to the administration but nothing has been done."

In other villages, she promised to attend to complaints of re-fitting broken huts, providing solar water tanks and piped water supply wherever possible.

On Tuesday, she will meet the people of her constituency at the Bhuvemau guesthouse, the Gandhis' official residence in Rae Bareli. She will also inaugurate a solar water tank project built with her MP local area development funds. On Monday, she also visited the Bheetargaon Ma Anandi Devi Mandir
