Nano centre, park to open in 4-5 months

BANGALORE: The proposed Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences, a flagship nanotechnology research institute, will begin functioning in 4 to 5 months, noted scientist C N R Rao said on Monday.

The new facility will also house the ambitious nano park for industries and entrepreneurship. "...The state government has provided 14 acres of land near Nelamangala and all statutory permissions have been sought," he said. The director has been chosen; the Centre has to approve the name.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), of which Rao is a founder-director, has erected the compound walls around the designated area. The nano centre will receive initial funding of at least Rs 50 crore from the Centre, Rao pointed out.

The scientist was speaking after the official announcement of the 7th edition of Bangalore India Nano, scheduled from December 4 to 6.

Want to encourage startups

IT, BT, S&T secre tary Srivatsa Krishna said the government wants to encourage startups and entrepreneurs in the nano field. "The commercialized market in nanotechnology will be $3 trillion by 2018 and we want to support industries to take a big slice of this market," he said.

IT-BT minister S R Patil said the government will strive to make Bangalore, which is already called the IT capital, a nano capital."
