The good, the bad and the down right hideous: VMAs 2014 fashion round-up

The good, the bad and the down right hideous: VMAs 2014 fashion round-up

Some of the biggest names in music hit the red carpet last night for the MTV VMAs, but we feel somewhat let down in the fashion stakes.
With usually stylish names like the Jenner sisters, Chloe Moretz and Taylor Swift thrown into the red carpet mix, you’d expect some of the prettiest frocks your eyes have seen since the Kids’ Choice Awards earlier this month.
But no.
Be prepared.
The good…

Beyonce
Beyonce rarely gets it wrong. She played it safe for the VMAs in a slinky sheer black lace dress by Nicholas Jebran Courture that clung to her world famous curves although we would have liked to see her branch out in something more eye-catching.

Kendall Jenner
Kendall has become one mega player in the fashion circuit following her AW14 fashion week status. She kept it understated in a sheer black jumpsuit with faux-bra panelling. Effortless, chic, but a little bit boring, no?

Rita Ora
Rita always has to have one up on everyone else, and she did in this plunging red satin gown with a split so high it basically showed off her lady area. The frock was by Donna Karan Atelier and probably wouldn’t have worked on anyone else, but Rita’s vintage Marilyn Monroe style pulled it off, sort of.

Gwen Stefani
We’d be rolling around the floor with a laughing-induced belly ache if Kimmy K tried to pull off this L.A.M.B. two piece, but Gwen just made it pop. The cigarette pants were tailored perfectly whilst the garishly girlie colour ensured she didn’t look like the 97 per cent of other attendees who stuck to monochrome.

Olivia Culpo
Little-known Olivia looks simple, elegant and lovely in a low-cut monochrome gown. The beauty pageant queen hit the red carpet with boyfriend Nick Jonas and there’s no doubt some of the red carpet heavyweights could take a tip or two from this sophisticated starlet.

The bad…

Jennifer Lopez
Oh Jen, you just want us all to look at that mega bod, don’t you? While there’s no denying her body looks absolutely smoking in this dazzling Charbel Zoe gown, it wouldn’t look good on anyone that wasn’t partaking in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing.

Jessie J
Jess picked up a nice IKEA bed sheet and twizzled it round into a Grecian gown number like she was a year six student learning about the olden times. The British singer chose an unflattering Vintage Haltson gown that swamped her slim frame.

Kim Kardashian
Kimmy, Kimmy, Kimmy. I mean, yes, we’ve definitely seen worse, but the intricately beaded number from Balmain just makes Kim’s in-your-face boobs look pretty bulbous. Yikes.

Solange Knowles
Solange normally gets it spot on, but this ill-fitting trouser suit does not quite work. The oversized tuxedo blazer swamps Solange’s trim frame, whilst the glitter effect reminds us of something we bought from Tammy Girl in the nineties. Oops.

Kylie Jenner
The youngest of the Kardashian clan didn’t quite live up to her usual rising fashion star status in this satin shirt dress. It reminds us quite a lot of something Julia Roberts might have worn in the early noughties, and the glam gown fails to flatter her figure, not to mention it adds at least a decade on her 17 years.

And the hideous…

Chloe Moretz
We had SUCH high hopes for Chloe Moretz. The rumoured girlfriend of Brooklyn Beckham looks like she’s raided her mum’s wardrobe in this pink Louis Vuitton mash-up. While the top is OK, the pastel pink trousers scream all sorts of mid-life crisis. Oh, Chloe, you can pick yourself up from this.

Taylor Swift
Tay Tay has clearly been looking up to the likes of Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus, because this horrendous leotard/playsuit thing is all sorts of wrong. Firstly, and most importantly, that camel toe. Just, that camel toe. Secondly, are you off to perform in a circus later? Oh Taylor, stick to what you know… classic, if not a bit dull. It works.

Amber Rose
Amber showed off her post-baby body in chains and a thong. As you do. Although Amber is a regular to worst-dressed lists, this porn star creation is right up there with her worst decisions ever. EVER. She credited the outfit’s inspiration to Rose McGowan who wore a similar get-up to the 1998 VMAs, while on the arm of Marilyn Manson.
And a special mention to…

Katy Perry
Katy made us all take a trip down memory lane in this Versace creation, ushering us back to when Britney and Justin were the best couple in the world. Katy turned up to the awards with rapper Riff Raff on her arm, and the duo paid a tribute to the noughties couple in matching denim patchwork outfits. We couldn’t be prouder.
