MOGADISHU, Somalia—Somali officials said Tuesday that the U.S. airstrike the previous day targeted a town where senior commanders of the al-Shabaab militant group were meeting, including the group's leader Ahmed Abdi Godane.

Somali officials said the strike was in the Lower Shabelle region—the region that also includes the town of Barawe, the scene of a failed Navy SEAL operation last October.
