Aaliyah
was professionally in peak position when she hit the
VMAs at New York’s Radio City Music Hall
back in 2000. The pop&B star had not only made the leap into film with a role in “Romeo Must Die,” but her contribution to the action flick’s soundtrack was just as successful. The 21-year-old’s Timbaland-produced “Try Again,” took home two Moonmen that year, for Best Female Video and Best Video for a Film. But a
fatal plane crash
would make September 7, 2000, her last MTV Video Music Awards.
On Sunday night, the
2014 VMAs
rolled out at The Forum in Inglewood, California, and while the girls seemed to own the night — from
Vanguard Award winner Beyonce
to power
vocalist Ariana Grande
— we couldn’t help but miss a certain “babygirl.”
The subject of an upcoming
Lifetime biopic
, Aaliyah died 13 years ago today (August 25). But more than a dozen years later, she’s still not forgotten. The hashtag #RIPAaliyah trended Stateside; here are just a few of the fans paying homage with fave lyrics, “flawless” pics and moving notes.
